What Is JUPEB: How to Register & What Can You Do With It?
You don’t need to worry anymore if you don’t get direct admission into a Nigerian university. The JUPEB program offers an advanced alternative pathway for university entry, applicable to both Nigerian and international universities. Discover what JUPEB entails, how to register, and the opportunities it provides.
Launched by the Federal Government of Nigeria in April 2014, JUPEB’s portal welcomes millions of applicants annually. Before you begin, it’s important to understand the program’s requirements and choose the correct subject combinations.
What is JUPEB?
JUPEB stands for the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board. This advanced-level examination body, created and managed by the University of Lagos (UNILAG), is relatively new.
It has been certified by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) and offers an A-Level program that ensures successful candidates can gain admission directly into the 200-level of their university courses.
How does JUPEB work?
JUPEB, established in 2013 by a group of universities led by the University of Lagos, is a full-time study program offered at tertiary institutions within the JUPEB consortium.
The program spans nine to ten months, divided into two semesters. During these semesters, successful applicants attend lectures at designated JUPEB study centers. Prospective candidates must apply for their chosen courses exclusively through the JUPEB official website, which provides access to program forms, registration requirements, and fee details.
JUPEB is accredited by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) as an A-level program, enabling candidates to gain direct admission into the 200-level at universities upon completion.

Advantages and disadvantages of JUPEB
JUPEB offers the advantage of non-expiry of results, allowing them to be utilized multiple times. Moreover, it holds recognition from both Nigerian and international universities. Nevertheless, there exist certain constraints, which include:
- The enrollment costs are high, making it difficult for the less privileged candidates. The cost ranges between ₦280,000 and ₦450,000.
- Limitations in university choices. Not all universities accept JUPEB results.
- The high-standard examination process and the rigorous curriculum design may cause undue stress to some students.
What is the meaning of JUPEB?
JUPEB stands for Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. It’s an intensive program that allows candidates who pass to gain direct entry into 200-level without needing to take the JAMB exam.
Is JUPEB registration still on?
The registration for the academic year 2024/2025 ended on June 3, 2024.
What is the duration of JUPEB?
The JUPEB program spans up to one academic year, typically lasting 9 to 10 months, split into two semesters. Students are required to undergo ongoing assessments and a final exam at the conclusion of each semester.
How long does the JUPEB exam last?
The JUPEB exams occur annually in either June or July, spanning three weeks. Each day covers two subjects, with each standard exam lasting two and a half hours. The exam questions are designed based on the syllabus.
Does the JUPEB result expire?
JUPEB remains valid indefinitely and can be utilized for applications to the same or different institutions in subsequent years. This is unlike JAMB or UTME, which have an expiration after one year. In Nigeria, aside from UTME, there are various pathways to gaining admission into universities, with JUPEB being a notable option. Students can access the JUPEB portal to learn about its requirements and registration procedures.
