UNIZIK to Host Career Development Summit to Guide Mass Communication Students’ Careers
Dr. Chioma Agbasimelo, the departmental head of mass communication at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra, has revealed that a significant proportion of students, sixteen percent, fail to get employment in newsrooms upon completing their studies.
In order to tackle this scenario, the department will organize a future development summit on April 25th, 2024, with the purpose of providing guidance to mass communication students about their future trajectories.
Dr. Agbasimelo said at a press conference on Monday that Valentine Obienyem, the media aide to Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), would deliver the keynote speech at the event.
Additional speakers will be Prof. Chinwe Uzochukwu, Head of the Mass Communication Department at Paul University, and Prof. Stella Okunna, who will assume the role of chairman and main paper presenter.
Dr. Agbasimelo expressed concern about students graduating without a distinct focus or specialization, which may result in ambiguity throughout their industrial training.
In response, the department’s conference committee took the initiative to arrange the summit with the goal of providing guidance to the students.
The summit’s objective is to provide education to all 1,270 students in the department, which includes around 300 first-year students.
The goal is to assist them in identifying areas of interest and specialization right from the beginning. The objective is to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to seamlessly integrate into newsrooms after completing their studies.
Several universities are now undergoing a reorganization of their mass communication departments, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University is likewise in the midst of this process.
The department has assembled a group of seasoned experts from many sectors to deliver speeches during the summit; one of them is Valentine Obienyem, who has considerable expertise in both media and law.
Additional distinguished speakers include Prof. Chinwe Uzochukwu, Prof. Stella Okunna, and university leaders including Vice Chancellor Prof. Charles Esimone and the Faculty Dean.
Furthermore, Mr. Mike Odili from Anambra State Signage and Advertising Agency, Mrs. Chike Ene from UNIZIK PRO, Mr. Elvis Ohanyele, Comrade Alloy Attah, and other individuals will serve as session leaders.
Dr. Agbasimelo was hopeful that the summit would motivate students to cultivate their passions and pursue areas of expertise, eventually resulting in more prosperous professional paths.
