Over 12,539 Candidates Sit for May Diet of Teachers’ Professional Qualifying Examination
During the May session of the Teachers’ Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) conducted by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), a noteworthy 12,539 individuals actively participated across the nation.
The TRCN, adamant about maintaining standards in education, issued a stern caution to both state authorities and private educational institutions, stressing the imperative of hiring only those possessing valid TRCN certification and licensing for teaching roles spanning from primary to tertiary levels.
Dr. Jacinta Ezeahurukwe, the Director of Certification and Licensing at TRCN, underscored this point during a press conference held on Saturday at SASCON International School in Abuja, where she was overseeing the examination process. She emphasized the enduring significance of the teachers’ qualifying exam, which was instituted in 2017 and is deemed indispensable for ensuring the competence of educators.
An unexpected development surfaced in Benue State, as it emerged as the leader with a remarkable 1,416 candidates registered for the examination, surpassing all other states and even the Federal Capital Territory.
The essence of the PQE lies in its role as a vital tool for evaluating the professional acumen of educators. It stands as a compulsory benchmark for licensing and certifying teachers across Nigeria, serving as a prerequisite for their engagement in classroom teaching roles.
Ezeahurukwe underscored the pressing priority placed on the meticulous selection of competent educators across all educational tiers, ranging from primary to tertiary institutions, by both governmental bodies and private organizations.
This emphasis on quality assurance extends to the rigorous certification procedures that aspiring teachers must undergo.
Central to this process is the Professional Qualifying Examination, a pivotal milestone held biannually in May–June (Batch ‘A’) and November (Batch ‘B’).
This examination serves as a crucial gateway for educators aspiring to obtain official registration and licensure, marking their professional standing within Nigeria’s educational landscape.
