Nasarawa State University Courses and Admission Requirements
Nigeria is rapidly advancing in the education sector, and Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) stands out among the nation’s many institutions. Equipped with modern facilities and an environment conducive to learning, NSUK offers a variety of programs across nine faculties.
Many students, especially those from Nigeria’s large population of over 200 million, aspire to study here, benefiting from the institution’s commitment to research and innovation.
Umar Yahaya, an alumnus of the university, shared key insights into the university’s admission process and offered advice on how to navigate the requirements.
Admission Requirements and Process at NSUK
For prospective students, understanding the admission criteria is crucial. NSUK follows a standard five-subject requirement for undergraduate courses, with specific subjects varying based on the chosen program.
Yahaya highlighted that candidates must have at least five credits in their O-level exams, including English and Mathematics. Additional subjects depend on the course being pursued.
Yahaya emphasized that while students may select their subjects for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam based on what they believe they excel in, it’s important to ensure their choices align with their desired course’s subject requirements.
“Many students unknowingly choose subjects they are more comfortable with, not realizing they do not meet the course-specific criteria,” Yahaya stated.
Course-Specific Requirements and Common Challenges
NSUK provides detailed information on its website about the specific subject requirements for each course. For example, courses in the Faculty of Administration, including accounting and business administration, require candidates to take Mathematics and Economics in their UTME. English is a compulsory subject for all applicants, regardless of their course.
In addition to subject requirements, Yahaya pointed out a common challenge students face—unfamiliarity with the course’s specific subject combinations during JAMB registration. He advised prospective students to familiarize themselves with the course requirements beforehand to avoid making incorrect subject choices.
Cut-off Marks and Admission Chances
The significance of meeting the required cut-off mark cannot be overstated. Yahaya explained that each year, the JAMB matriculation board sets a national cut-off mark. For the 2023/2024 session, this was set at 160. He noted that while this is the general mark, a higher score increases a student’s chances of succeeding in the post-UTME screening and ultimately gaining admission.
