Legislators Push for Increase in UBEC Funding to 4%
The House of Representatives has approved a bill to amend the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Act, aiming to raise its budget from two to four percent of the consolidated revenue.
The statement was delivered by Bako Useni, the Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, during the committee’s oversight session at the Digital Resource Centre in Abuja.
The primary objective of the digital resource centre is to offer high-quality digital instructional materials to schools nationwide.
Additionally, it aims to facilitate modern capacity building for key stakeholders in the education sector, ultimately resulting in the provision of high-quality basic education.

According to Useni, the legislators recognised the necessity of augmenting the resources allocated to the basic education sub-sector in order to achieve the established objectives.
Consequently, an amendment bill was proposed to raise the revenue generated by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) from two percent to four percent.
According to him, the committee expressed great satisfaction with the digital resource centre and has consistently aimed to offer new aspects to the sub-sector.
The individual provided assurance that the committee will maintain a consistent oversight function to safeguard the long-term viability of the centre, as well as other entities within its jurisdiction.
According to Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of the commission, the establishment of the centre aims to advance digital education to a higher level.
He elucidated that the establishment would guarantee that educators receive training in the novel pedagogical approach, thereby equipping them with the necessary knowledge to comprehend digital learning and effectively engage as active participants.
Bobboyi revealed that the centre would be responsible for coordinating the implementation of smart schools throughout the nation, with the aim of facilitating digital learning. Additionally, the centre would be utilised to restructure the managerial cadre within the basic education sub-sector.
