Kano State Rescinds Girls’ School Closures with New Governor’s Initiative
In a decisive move to rectify a previous administration’s educational policy, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has announced the re-boarding of 15 girls’ secondary schools that were closed under the leadership of his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
This action marks a significant shift in the state’s approach to education, emphasizing the current administration’s commitment to female education and academic development.
Governor Yusuf’s decision comes in response to widespread criticism and concern over the abrupt closure of these schools, which had a detrimental impact on the academic pursuits of numerous talented girls. “I am deeply dismayed by the closure of these schools,” Governor Yusuf said during a surprise visit to Government Girls Secondary School, Albasu.
“These closures halted the educational journeys of many young girls who were eager to learn and excel.”
The Governor’s Spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, issued a statement on Monday confirming that Yusuf’s visit to the Albasu school was part of a broader initiative to restore educational services. During the visit, the Governor gave clear instructions for the urgent posting of teachers specializing in English Language, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences to enhance the pedagogical quality of the institution.
“We are committed to addressing the educational gaps created by the previous administration,” Yusuf emphasized. “Our goal is to ensure that these schools are fully equipped to provide quality education.”
Rehabilitation efforts are already underway for the re-boarded schools, with the aim of having them ready for the upcoming school calendar, which begins next week.
The Governor has also pledged continued investment in building and rehabilitating classrooms, providing necessary furniture, and equipping schools with teaching aids. “Creating a conducive learning environment is crucial,” Yusuf stated. “Our administration will spare no effort in making sure that our schools are well-resourced and effective in their teaching.”
Furthermore, the Governor inspected the near-completion of a 5-kilometer road project leading to the Albasu school. Expressing satisfaction with the progress, Yusuf urged the contractor to expedite the final stages of the project. “This road work is essential for ensuring safe and convenient access to the school,” he noted. “I urge the contractor to complete the remaining work as swiftly as possible.”
Governor Yusuf’s proactive stance highlights a renewed focus on educational reforms and infrastructure development in Kano State, signaling a new chapter in the state’s commitment to advancing the educational landscape.
