Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
On February 13, 1978, the Federal Military Government passed Act No. 2 of 1978, which established the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Following this, in August 1988, the Federal Executive Council amended Decree No. 2 of 1978. These amendments were later consolidated into Decree No. 33 of 1989, which became effective on December 7th, 1989.
(JAMB): Responsibilities and Mandate
Decree No. 2 of 1978, as amended by Decree No. 33 of 1989, entrusted JAMB with several important responsibilities:
(a) Conducting Matriculation Examinations for admission into all universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria.
(b) Appointing examiners, moderators, invigilators, members of subject panels and committees, and other relevant personnel for matriculation examinations and associated matters.
(c) Placing suitably qualified candidates into tertiary institutions, taking into account factors such as available vacancies in each institution, approved guidelines, candidate preferences, and other relevant considerations directed by the Honorable Minister or deemed appropriate by the Board.
(d) Collecting and disseminating information on all matters related to admissions into tertiary institutions or any other relevant aspects to the Board’s functions.
(e) Undertaking any necessary or expedient activities for the effective discharge of its functions as mandated by the Decree.
These provisions enable JAMB to play an important role in coordinating and facilitating the admissions process into tertiary institutions, ensuring transparency, fairness, and efficiency in the selection of candidates for higher education in Nigeria.
