JAMB Explains Why getting 300 and above in UTME might not guarantee admission
The conditions for admission into the federal university have been addressed by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which has asserted that achieving a score of 300 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would be insufficient if additional criteria were not satisfied.
JAMB provided clarification in a tweet in response to a candidate’s compliment, whereby they expressed the view that it is unfavourable for an individual to be denied admission based on their catchment region.
Inilayo Stephen Opuofoni, the candidate, sent a tweet advocating for the revocation of admissions for Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) in Nigeria.
He also praised Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB registrar, for his commendable efforts.
Opuofoni tweeted:
“Prof. Oloyede is doing his best. Kudos to him. In addition, he should work towards ensuring that admission is made based on merit and not on ELDS. Why should someone who scores above 300 not get admitted into a federal university? It is not his/her catchment area.”
In response to the tweet, JAMB acknowledged that achieving a score of 300 in UTME is commendable, but it does not ensure admission until other requirements are satisfied.
JAMB’s reply states:
“ELDS is one of the criteria for admission. It can’t be jettisoned. An aggregate of 300 scores in UTME is good but does not guarantee admission if the applicant does not meet other criteria.
