Ghana Outperforms Nigeria and Others, Achieving Top Results in 2023 WASSCE
Ghanaian students have achieved the highest rankings in the 2023 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), placing them among the top three contenders.
The examination for final-year secondary school students in the five member countries of Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia was administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The examination witnessed the participation of 2,327,342 pupils, with Nigeria accounting for 1,613,733 candidates, representing more than 70 percent of the total participants.
It is noteworthy that the three Ghanaian students who have achieved the highest academic performance are male, and two of them are affiliated with St James Seminary Senior High School (SHS).
The individuals that achieved the top position in the competition are Amo-Kodieh Kofi, Dzandu Selorm, and Asenso-Gyambibi Daniel, who secured the second and third positions, respectively.
During the recently finished 72nd general meeting of the council in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the trio were announced and subsequently awarded the WAEC International Excellence Award in recognition of their exceptional performances.
Kofi received the Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for being the top candidate in the examination.
Mammah Raymonda and Bangura Joshua, two candidates from Sierra Leone, achieved first and second place, respectively, and were awarded the National Distinction award.
Additionally, Fillie Sahr Edward, another student, won the National Merit Award at the event.
In a statement provided to journalists in Nigeria, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, the head of public affairs of WAEC International, confirmed that information.
According to Ojijeogu, Prof. Thomas Brima Rick has been elected as the head of WAEC.
The 21st chairman of the organisation at the forum was Yormah, who formerly held the positions of Deputy Vice Chancellor at Fourah Bay College and Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Sierra Leone. Yormah assumed this role after Prof. Ato Essuman from Ghana.
Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio, the President of Sierra Leone, was complimented by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh for the examination body’s esteemed position among global examining bodies.
He pledged his government’s unwavering dedication to cooperate and interact with the organisation in any area that would be beneficial to both parties.
