Federal Poly Offa Students Stage Protest Over SUG Election and Other Grievances
At the Federal Polytechnic in Offa, which is located in the state of Kwara, students organised a peaceful demonstration on Thursday to demand that the students’ union election be held.
Employees and pupils were unable to gain entry to the permanent location of the school since the gate was closed.
A demand for student elections prior to enrollment was made by the students who demonstrated.
As part of their demands, they pushed for the elimination of chest x-rays, the exorbitant expense of textbooks, and sexual harassment. Additionally, they urged that the costs for hostels be voluntary rather than obligatory.
According to Dr. Atilola Moses Idowu, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal poly Offa branch, the development has been validated.
Over the course of Thursday, he disclosed that the students had a problem with the administration of the college over issues pertaining to the students’ elections.
“The major demand of the aggrieved students is the conduct of the students’ union government election and it will come when the students union is on ground, the matter will be tabled before the management for action.
“It is a minor issue but the students are not patient, I was with them for two hours to negotiate and pacify them as directed by the rector of the institution.
“The rector said I should go on with the negotiation with the students but they were adamant despite all strategies adopted.
“However, calm has been restored on the campus immediately the management directed the students to go home for the Easter celebrations,” Atilola added.
