Charterhouse Lagos speaks after criticsm over high school fees of N42M per annum with N2M application fees
Charterhouse Lagos, a recently established private British school in Lagos, has justified its annual school fee of N42 million per primary school student and a N2 million application fee amid criticisms from some Nigerians on social media.
These critics have deemed the fees exorbitant, especially considering Nigeria’s economic challenges, with many citizens living in poverty and the minimum wage standing at just N30,000 per month.
Responding to the backlash in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, Charterhouse’s director of communications, admissions, and marketing, Damilola Olatunbosun, elaborated on the rationale behind the school’s fee structure. While acknowledging people’s right to express their opinions, Olatunbosun highlighted that parents interested in enrolling their children at Charterhouse have not raised objections to the fees.
“Charterhouse is not just like every other school anywhere globally but a prestigious and value-driven world-class educational institution that parents, who love quality and second-to-none education, will always want their children to be,” Olatunbosun asserted.
He further noted that since the school’s official launch in September, there has been significant parental interest in enrollment. Many parents, according to him, view the fees as reasonable given the quality of education provided. Olatunbosun emphasized that some parents, both in Nigeria and abroad, recognize the comparative affordability of Charterhouse tuition compared to sending their children overseas.
Highlighting the school’s commitment to excellence, Olatunbosun stated that Charterhouse offers facilities and educational standards comparable to top UK-based schools. He underscored the institution’s objective of delivering a British-style education infused with Nigerian cultural elements, emphasizing its expansive campus in Lekki, which represents a significant investment.
Addressing concerns about potential fee adjustments in response to criticism, Olatunbosun reiterated the school’s stance on providing value for money. He emphasized that parents choosing Charterhouse understand the cost associated with quality education and appreciate the institution’s commitment to delivering on its promises.
