Abia to Recruit 2500 Teachers
The Abia State Government has announced plans to address the teacher shortage in both primary and secondary schools by hiring 2,500 new teachers. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of education throughout the state.
During a press conference held in Umuahia, Mr. Goodluck Ubochi, the Commissioner for Basic Education, confirmed that the state government is taking significant steps to recruit teachers. He emphasized that this move is essential to filling the gap in teaching staff, which has long been a concern for the state’s education system.
Ubochi explained that quality education is closely tied to having sufficient teaching staff and that the current shortage affects the ability to teach various subjects effectively.
To ensure transparency, Ubochi revealed that applications for the positions would be processed online. He assured the public that detailed information about the application process would be shared by Friday, providing clarity on how interested candidates can apply. He urged individuals to stay informed in the coming days for the official announcement.
As part of its broader educational strategy, the government has introduced a taskforce called the “Education Marshalls.”
These marshals are tasked with ensuring that all school-age children attend school during official hours. Ubochi explained that any child found outside the school premises during school hours would be taken to the nearest school.
The marshals would also contact the child’s parents or guardians to address the reasons behind the child’s absence from school.
The purpose of the Education Marshalls is not to punish children but to facilitate their return to school and ensure compliance with the Free and Compulsory Basic Education programme. This initiative aims to keep children in the educational system and combat truancy.
Mathematics Clinic: Strengthening Core Skills
The Abia State Government is also launching a Mathematics Clinic aimed at improving the mathematical skills of Junior and Senior Secondary School 3 students. These sessions will take place daily from 7:00 AM to 7:45 AM and are designed to build student confidence and competence in mathematics.
Ubochi highlighted that experienced teachers would lead the sessions, with school principals overseeing the program’s implementation. He emphasized that the initiative is particularly important for students in certificate classes, namely JSS3 and SS3, where performance in key subjects like mathematics is crucial.
In addition to the morning sessions, the government is extending school hours in the afternoon to further support students. From 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, additional teaching sessions will focus on key subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English for JSS3 and SS3 students.
This extended time is aimed at reinforcing critical subjects that are vital for the students’ success in their exams.
Ubochi expressed confidence that these initiatives would help strengthen the academic foundation of students, preparing them for future challenges and enhancing their performance in both internal and external examinations.
Conclusion
The Abia State Government’s multifaceted approach to improving education demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing challenges in the sector.
With plans to hire thousands of teachers, enforce school attendance, and provide targeted academic support for students, the government is setting the stage for significant educational reform in the state.
